Award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay is giving an up-close view of her work on the set of Origin in a new course on MasterClass — and The Hollywood Reporter has a first look at the teaser. DuVernay’s class “Reframe Your Thinking” will launch in early 2024.
In the class, DuVernay shares how the skills she uses to make award-winning films can also be applied to goals in everyday life.
“They say everything’s been done. It hasn’t been done your way,” says DuVernay in the trailer for her class, which shows behind the scenes footage from Origin. “This is my next film and MasterClass was embedded in the process so we can show you strategies you can use in any part of your life where you want to lead.”

MasterClass is also partnering with DuVernay’s Array and its Seat 16 program to help thousands of teens see the film and experience the class. Each $16 donation gives one 16-year-old a ticket to see Origin in theaters and a free annual membership to MasterClass. Origin, which tells the story of Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Isabel Wilkerson (played by Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) opened for a limited run in New York and Los Angeles on Dec. 8 and opens nationwide on Jan. 19, 2024.
MasterClass is a subscription-based platform that offers lessons from experts in a variety of fields including Amy Poehler (Prepare to Be Unprepared), Kevin Hart (Using Humor to Make Your Mark), Bob Iger (Business Strategy and Leadership), Issa Rae (Creating Outside the Lines), Aaron Sorkin (Screenwriting) and NINJA (Become a Streamer) and more.
